Capital City High School is looking for a dedicated & talented English Learner (EL) Specialist with interest and expertise in best practice instruction and pedagogy for identified EL students.The EL Specialist works to oversee the implementation of a strong instructional program for ELs. The EL Specialist works with both general education and inclusion teachers to cultivate instruction that supports access to the curriculum and implement effective instructional strategies that supports academic growth. The EL specialist collects and uses data to ensure individual student progress and program effectiveness.The EL Specialist is expected to be an expert in strategies for supporting English language acquisition and is expected to continually increase their knowledge and expertise in the field.
This is a 10-month position, which is exempt and therefore not eligible for overtime pay under the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.

The many and varied responsibilities of the EL Specialist include the following:
Collaborate with teachers to design and implement engaging instruction that leads to English language fluency for ELs in all content areas.
Support teachers in implementing structures and strategies of the SIOP model. Coach inclusion and general education teachers on instructional delivery. Suggest accommodations and supports as well as lesson structures to support ELs.
Model best teaching practices with the goal of developing teacher capacity to support scaffolded instruction and differentiation and provide accommodations for ELs.Co-plan and co-teach when appropriate and model best practices for co-teaching.
Work with inclusion teachers and Director of Student Services to conduct, organize, and analyze on-going assessments of student performance using multiple assessment tools.
Analyze data to ensure ELs are making strong academic progress.Utilize data when planning for individual students.
Work with teaching teams to develop clear criteria and standards for quality work and regularly examine student work to ensure that it meets increasingly higher standards of quality.
Plan and deliver professional development to general education and inclusion teachers on the SIOP model and strategies for supporting ELs.
Work with inclusion teachers to ensure strong communication with families regarding service delivery and student progress.Serve as the primary contact with families for students with the highest level of need.
Support parents in understanding the instructional approach at Capital City and in learning how best to support their children’s learning. Assist with planning and facilitating parent workshops.
Capital City seeks to employ experienced, credentialed teachers. Ideal candidates have a Master’s degree and 3+ years of full-time teaching experience.
At least two of the following are required:Bachelor’s degree in education or field of instruction, 2+ years of full-time ESL/ESOL teaching experience, English as a Second Language certification or Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) certification.Candidates should be extremely knowledgeable about best practices for teaching reading to EL students.Candidates should also have:a commitment to meeting the needs of a diverse population, experience working in urban environments, strong knowledge of pedagogy and experience teaching strategies to support ELs, proven ability to work as a member of a team, strong leadership capabilities, and a commitment to their own learning.
Spanish speakers are desired.
In addition to the above requirements, teachers must meet the requirements of all hires at Capital City including a criminal background check.
