Job Description – Senior Anatomic Path Specialist (3291512) Senior Anatomic Path Specialist – ( 3291512 ) Senior Anatomic Path Specialist The AP Specialist Senior reports to the Surgical Pathology Supervisor and works independently, under minimal supervision. The AP Specialist Senior performs technical and clerical functions required for the efficient functioning of the laboratory. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Performs all duties of an AP Specialist II Ensures proper patient identification is maintained Grossing of selected intermediate specimens under indirect supervision of the Surgical Pathology Supervisor and Staff Pathologist Trains AP Specialist I, AP Specialist II, and new Residents in the accessioning and grossing of small surgical specimens Responsible for onboarding of new AP Specialist staff Supervises AP Specialists & CLAs in the absence of the Surgical Pathology Supervisor and Technical Director, specifically in the frozen section and accessioning areas during the late afternoon and evening shifts Responds to inquiries regarding patient specimens and related information Maintains a safe working environment Makes recommendations for process improvements and assists in implementing changes Troubleshoots and rectifies problems pertaining to surgical specimens with minimal supervision Assists Surgical Pathology Supervisor and Technical Director with Tissue Bank responsibilities Reviews Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and periodically updates them Contributes to evaluations for AP Specialist I and AP Specialist II Responsible for re-training of AP Specialist staff (when necessary) and counseling when error-rate is high and/or productivity is low Works with the Surgical Pathology Supervisor to decrease errors and/or increase productivity of AP Specialist staff Autopsy Service Duties: Administrative duties pertaining to paperwork, permissions, and patient chart Technical duties include: Evisceration Maintenance of autopsy suite Weekend on-call coverage, as needed May be on additional committees, as necessary, and attend departmental meetings, with or in the absence of the Surgical Pathology Supervisor Assists with special projects as directed REQUIREMENTS: Baccalaureate degree in science required. 24 credits of science required (Chemistry and Biology based) Courses in Medical Terminology and Human Anatomy recommended 3 to 5 years of related clinical experience required REQUIREMENTS: Baccalaureate degree in science required. 24 credits of science required (Chemistry and Biology based) Courses in Medical Terminology and Human Anatomy recommended 3 to 5 years of related clinical experience required Massachusetts General Hospital is an Affirmative Action Employer.
