ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION
Inward Bound Mindfulness (Inward Bound) is a national nonprofit providing mindfulness retreats and programs for teens and young adults, and the caregivers and youth-serving professionals committed to supporting them. With a focus on self-awareness, compassion, and ethical decision-making, and meditation, it empowers participants to enhance their lives and communities. Inward Bound emphasizes the role of mindfulness in social justice advocacy and integrates values of diversity, equity, and accessibility into its work. Operated by a collaborative leadership team and supported by staff, teachers, and volunteers, the organization fosters heart-centered leaders equipped to address contemporary challenges with resilience and compassion. Inward Bound is shifting back in the direction of a traditional non-profit leadership model structure while intending to retain the spirit of equity, trust, and evolution that comes from progressive collaboration. The organization is governed by a dedicated Board of Directors, values representation, and strives for staff diversity to reflect the experiences of its youth demographic.
POSITION OVERVIEW
Inward Bound is seeking a visionary and collaborative leader to serve as its next Executive Director. The right candidate will deeply align with the organization’s mission, vision, and values, and have a demonstrated commitment to mindfulness and experience with teen and young adult programming. They will be driven by a commitment to both individual and social transformation grounded in mindfulness program development and delivery for teens, young adults, and youth-serving professionals. They have a strong, strategic vision for the future growth of Inward Bound and a creative approach to organizational development. This individual will understand Inward Bound’s history and achievements as well as Inward Bound’s future goals, and will guide Inward Bound towards long-term sustainability as a leader in mindfulness education.
The Executive Director position is full time, reporting to the Board of Directors, and overseeing a team of remote staff. Skills in fundraising, management, and communication are essential. They should enjoy networking and fostering external partnerships and have a commitment to diversity and equity and promoting an inclusive and respectful workplace.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Budget, Fundraising, and Development
• Creates and implements multifaceted development strategies as the organization’s chief fundraiser, including large grant acquisitions and individual gifts exceeding $100,000
• Manages an annual budget of $1.1+ million, providing fiscal oversight with the Board
• Implements and manages fund development strategies for continued funding
• Ensures diversification and growth of income streams (e.g., public and custom programs, products, philanthropy) and adjust priorities in relationship to internal and external trends
• Intentionally grows and nurtures the community of participants and stakeholders
• Collaborates on brand strategy for an exemplary digital experience across all platforms
• Builds strategic partnerships that contribute to programmatic growth and fund development.
Programming
• Oversees program planning and implementation that advances organizational goals, mission, and values
• Partners with program staff to design and launch new public and custom programs using financial models grounded in best practices
• Ensures that programs are in service of the existing community as well as designed to expand the base, prioritizing diversity
• Collaborates with partnerships outside of Inward Bound to find continued shared impact
• Supports the program lead to cultivate retreat teachers and mentor as well as program support staff
Strategic Planning and Leadership
• Stewards the existing strategic plan and execute a new strategic planning process after its completion in partnership with the Board, staff, and community stakeholders
• Develops annual goals and operating plans based on strategic plans for approval by the Board
• Empowers the staff to fulfill annual strategic goals and operating plans
• Serves as an ambassador for Inward Bound’s mission and values
• Represents Inward Bound through public speaking, webcasts, and other media
• Seeks opportunities to partner with like-minded organizations around the country
• Develops a network of spokespersons and message-carriers to help build and sustain organizational efforts
• Prioritizes diversity and belonging in all aspects of organizational leadership
• Provides leadership support to Board, committees, and special project committees
• Recruits and oversees staff, contractors, and vendors
QUALIFICATIONS
• Minimum of five years previous experience as an executive director or in an executive leadership role in a national nonprofit organization, educational institution, or business
• Proven experience working with and building a diverse, engaged board of directors
• Proven proficiency in project management and executing programs, campaigns, and/or initiatives
• Proven ability to lead, build, inspire, and create cohesiveness among a remote leadership team and manage complex workplace dynamics
• Leadership of successful fundraising campaigns, including grant acquisitions
• History of building strong relationships with donor and stakeholder communities
• Proven experience sustaining complex financial models with consistent success in maximizing ROI and mission impact
• Lifelong learner, including about diversity, equity, and inclusion, and interest in digging into the details
• Awareness and understanding of one’s own social identities (e.g., race, gender, sexuality, class) and how they intersect with systems of power and oppression
• Proven experience fostering diversity, inclusion, and belonging
• Proven success in reaching a diverse spectrum of community stakeholders and in building brand awareness through a demonstrated understanding of the efficacy of a strong brand presence
• Passion for and personal connection to Inward Bound’s mission, including a personal interest in mindfulness and/or meditation
• Established in national affiliations, networks, and partnerships with kindred leaders and organizations
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
This is a full-time remote position with a salary range $100,000–115,000 annually with travel as needed. Benefits include health, dental, and vision insurance; a retirement match; and generous PTO.
