The Director of Education will be an experienced educator who actively embraces the mission, vision, and philosophy of MMC. They will be an energetic, empathetic, culturally competent leader who delivers organizational goals by providing guidance, support, and oversight of the curriculum, teachers, students, and community members. They are a resource to parents and an active leader in building community for parents, neighbors, children, teachers, and administrators. The Director of Education oversees all Exploration in-school and after-school programming and also manages the day-to-day operations of the Musical Mentors Academy program. The Director of Education is also responsible for teacher recruitment, development, and review. In partnership with the Executive Director, the Director of Education will strategically develop programming, maintain and analyze new and existing programs, as well as support outreach programming. 

RESPONSIBILITIES

Program Design & Implementation (15% - 5-7 hours per week) 

Work with Executive Director to design program frameworks for Musical Explorations, University Chapters, Musical Mentors Academy, and all Outreach Programming 
Design and create innovative programs, as part of MMC’s goal to expand its reach, which incorporate current educational trends, address the needs of our individual communities, and engage and excite participants and educators 
Identify opportunities and plan for program expansion 
Periodically review all programming, and design responsive and strategic adjustments 
Build data evaluation systems to assess student progress, program impact, and areas for growth 
Oversee the creation of MME and MMA curriculum 
Conduct regular strategic reviews and assessments to ensure the organization's programs remain aligned with evolving community needs and organizational priorities 

School and Community Engagement (15% - 5-7 hours per week) 

Sustain and expand relationships with current and potential partner schools as well as higher education institutions
Serve in partnership with the Executive Director as the organization’s spokesperson in all education matters, acting as a liaison between MMC and partner organizations
Explore and identify opportunities for additional programmatic activities serving current and future partners 
Embrace other school and community engagement duties, as needed 

Program Management/Operations (20% - 7–9 hours per week) 

Oversee successful implementation of organization’s educational programming including its structure, schedules, annual calendar, repertoire, and social development activities 
Oversee implementation of programs’ curriculum and ensure cohesiveness between programs while remaining mindful of the uniqueness of each community served 
Recruit, onboard, and manage a team of Teaching Artists (group lesson teachers)
Recruit, onboard, and manage a team of Musical Mentors (private lesson teachers), including the application and enrollment process
Process and record the results of background checks for all Teaching Artists and Musical Mentors
Create student/family and teacher onboarding materials for each program, including program-specific handbooks 
Conduct formal and informal observations, and provide constructive feedback 
Manage complaints and challenges that may arise among teaching artists, volunteer instructors, students, parents, or partner organizations 
Monitor program budgets with support from the Executive Director  
Facilitate communication with families with past-due accounts 
Create and implement MMC training program for teaching artists and Musical Mentors, working closely with Director of External Affairs to offer a wide range of offerings
Process payroll for MME Teaching Artists and class assistants

Musical Mentors Academy (35% - 13-15 hours per week) 

Serve as the primary administrator for MMA 
Provide support to parents and students regarding program offerings, billing, and financial aid awards  
Work with MMC staff to create promotional materials 
Create and update program application 
Manage application and enrollment process, including assigning scholarship awards 
Match students with Musical Mentors
Work closely with partner schools/programs to oversee the day-to-day operations of in-person private lessons
Create a calendar of workshops, studio classes, and performance opportunities 
Consistently communicate with students and families - sending updates and reminders about schedules, upcoming performances, sign-ups, etc. 
Plan and execute end-of-year concerts, in collaboration with the MME manager - potential travel required 
Plan and execute online recitals
Distribute instruments and curriculum books as needed 
Process Musical Mentor payroll 

Other (10% - 3-5 hours per week) 

Participate in weekly one-on-one and all-staff meetings 
Create operational efficiencies using CRM software and other tools 
Opportunities to participate in educational and mentoring conferences and other professional development opportunities

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree in music education, education, music, or a related field; advanced degree or equivalent professional experience preferred 
Minimum of 5-7 years of relevant experience in education, music education, arts administration, or youth programming, including significant direct teaching experience 
Demonstrated expertise in classroom management, differentiated instruction, and student-centered teaching practices 
Demonstrated experience designing and implementing curriculum and educational programs for students with diverse ages, abilities, backgrounds, and learning needs 
Significant experience managing multi-site educational programming, including developing the systems, communication structures, and staff accountability necessary to ensure consistent program quality across locations
Experience recruiting, supervising, mentoring, and evaluating teachers, Teaching Artists, or other educators
Experience developing and facilitating training and professional development for educators and/or volunteers
Experience building and maintaining strong relationships with schools, families, community organizations, and educational partners 
Strong understanding of program assessment and evaluation, including using data and feedback to measure impact and strengthen programming 
Exceptional organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to balance long-term program strategy with hands-on day-to-day implementation 
Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to navigate challenging conversations and resolve conflicts effectively 
Proficiency with Google Workspace and comfort learning and using CRM, scheduling, and other technology platforms to improve program operations
Demonstrated experience managing and developing staff, including setting priorities, providing ongoing supervision and feedback, supporting professional growth, and ensuring accountability toward organizational and programmatic goals 
Deep commitment to equitable access to high-quality music education and mentorship and a belief in music as a powerful tool for learning, creativity, connection, and personal growth 
Completion of a successful background check 
Multiple language skills helpful (Spanish, Russian, and/or Mandarin preferred) 
Ability to maintain the confidentiality of sensitive student information
