Assistant Actuary – Casualty (NY HELPS)

The New York State Insurance Fund (NYSIF) is seeking an Assistant Actuary – Casualty to join its Actuarial Department in New York City. This entry-level opportunity supports actuarial projects related to Workers’ Compensation Insurance and is part of the NY HELPS program.

The Assistant Actuary will support actuarial analysis, research, data preparation and process improvement initiatives. Responsibilities include performing calculations related to insurance pricing, safety groups, loss reserves and expense reserves; conducting research studies; identifying loss drivers and trends; and assembling data from internal and external sources.

The position also provides exposure to analytical and data tools such as Spotfire, ResQ and SQL, as well as opportunities to automate processes using VBA, Microsoft Access and other software.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must have:

A bachelor’s degree that includes or is supplemented by at least 24 semester credit hours in mathematics, statistics and/or actuarial science.
Successful completion of at least one examination administered by the Society of Actuaries (SOA) or Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS).

Previous professional experience is not required for applicants who meet the educational and actuarial examination requirements.

Work hours generally between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM

Salary: $60,333–$75,869 per year
